The way to proceed for people who have been unable to formulate goals is simple. Fix the things in your life that announce themselves to be in need of repair. Practicing that is a really useful form of meditation.
Find the 5 things you could do today that will make tomorrow a little bit better. It is a very powerful technique. But ask yourself what you should do, don’t be a tyrant, you can usually negotiate with yourself.
Ask yourself in the morning what you should do. What are the issues that you have? And ask, don’t dictate like a tyrant, then you can usually negotiate with yourself. It’s like a practice domain. There are things inside your grasp that you can fix. So fix them. Your have your own problems – solve them.
Sort out the problems that are right in front of you, and you won’t believe how quickly you grow. Then you can turn to solving more complex problems, without making them worse.
We must have an aim. The nobler the aim, the better the life.
If we don't have a noble aim, then all we have are shallow trivial pleasures, which do not sustain us. Without a noble aim, how can we face life's tragedy? A noble aim is the bread without which we cannot live.
We must have an aim, and we must have a way of progressing towards that goal. We are activated by our aims, and our progress towards our goals, more than we are by the actual attainment of them. Having an aim, and moving towards it, is the only way to generate positive emotion.
No goal, no positive emotions; a goal is better than no goal. But the searching is better than the achievement. Aim high, at something you will never achieve, because the wanting is better than the having.
The fun is in the search, not the acquiring, because when you acquire, the motivating micro-personality disappears, and we are exploring creatures.
