Anything outside the tribal hierarchy is a threat. The (Radical) Right (low on openness) sees outsiders as potential pathogens, but good to trade with while the (Radical) Left seems to want psychologically to remain as children; that's why they reject the West, Christianity, rationality, because these all require the adult skill of self-examination.

In personality terms, Conservatives tend to be high in Conscientiousness but low in openness, while Liberals are the opposite. The conscientiousness trait prefers Order, the openness trait prefers Chaos.
