Nietzsche said that you could tell much about a man´s character by how much truth he could tolerate. Which is very interesting. You know there is an idea in the great western tradition that the truth is the way and the path of life. And that no one comes to the Father except trough the truth. And I believe that to be the case because I don´t think that you can manifest who you are without the truth. And so I think it is literally and metaphorically truth that the pathway to who you could be, if you were completely who you were is through the truth. And so the truth does set you free but the problem is that it destroys everything that isn´t worthy in you as it sets you free . And that´s a process of burning . And it’s painful because you cling to what you shouldn’t be. Partly out of pride and partly out of ignorance and partly out of laziness. And so then you encounter something true and you all know this, you all know this perfectly well. Because when was the last time that you learned something important that wasn’t a blow of some sort you know? It’s often you look back at your life and you think ‘oh God I really learned something there, I wouldn’t do that again.’ But it really changed my life.’ I mean sometimes it can really destroy you — an encounter with the truth and you never really recover. But now and then something comes along and straightens you out and a lot of you has to go. A lot of you has to burn away. And you know I suppose in some sense that everything about you that isn’t worthy is to be put into the flames. And that’s another reason to be not so casual to be claiming about what you believe. Because it isn’t something that you undertake without due caution.

Truth Destroys Everything That Isn’t Worthy in You

What Cures in Therapy is Truth

What cures in therapy is truth. That’s the curative. Now there is exposure to the things you’re afraid of and avoiding as well. But I would say that’s a form of enacted truth. Because if you know there is something you should do, by your own set of rules and your avoiding it then you’re enacting a lie, you know. You’re not telling one but you’re acting one out. It’s the same damn thing. So if I can get you to face what it is that you’re confronting that you know you shouldn’t be avoiding then what’s happening is that we’re both partaking in the process of attempting you to act out your deepest truth. And what happens is, that that improves peoples lives and it improves them radically. And the evidence, the clinical evidence for that is overwhelming. But of all the things that clinicians have established that’s credible, that’s number one, and that’s nested inside that deeper realization that the clinical experience is redemptive let’s say, because it’s designed to address suffering insofar as the people who are engaged in the process are both telling each other the truth. And then you think, well, obviously, because if you have some problems and you come to talk to me about them, well, first of all, just by coming to me to talk about them, you’ve admitted that they exist. Now, and that’s a pretty good start. And second, well, if you tell me about them then we know what they are, and then, if we know what they are, we can maybe start to layout some solutions, and then you can go act out the solutions to see if they work. But if you don’t admit they are there and you won’t tell me what they are, and I don’t, and I’m like posturing and acting egotistically and taking the upper hand and all of that in our discussions, well, how the hell is that going to work? You know, it might be comfortable, moment to moment, while we stay encapsulated in our delusion, but it’s not going to work. So a lot of that seems, to think it through, it seems pretty self-evident.[2]

We Have Access to Only Sufficient Truth

But here’s another way of looking at the Darwinian problem, as far as I can tell. So part of the reason that the Darwinians insist that random mutation is the source of continual— it’s not progress — continual survival is that the underlying environment changes, and it changes unpredictably. By its essential nature, it’s unpredictable. Thus, if it’s unpredictable, only random transformation can keep up with it, a lot of random transformation. Hopefully, the randomness of the environmental change will be matched by the randomness of the genetic change. OK. So what that means in part is that the environment, so to speak, is finally incomprehensible because you can’t predict it. OK. So that means that a limited creature that’s established itself by Darwinian means can’t have access to the truth. They can only have access to sufficient truth. And sufficient truth is the truth that allows you to survive and reproduce. And from a Darwinian perspective, there isn’t any truth past that. [3]

Truth Serves Life is a Darwinian Idea

So Nietzsche says truth serves life. In some sense, that is a Darwinian idea. If it is true enough, so that if you act it out or hold it, that increases your chances of survival and reproduction over long spans of time. That's true. OK. We have no idea that if our detailed knowledge about material world is going to be the type of knowledge that allows us to survive and reproduce over a long period of time. It's not being tested from a Darwinian perspective at all. You might say, well, of course the materialist perspective is right, look what we built with it. We built hydrogen bombs, for example. But then you might object to that by saying well yeah! We built hydrogen bombs, but the only reason we could build them or were willing to was because we left things out of the equation. Well what things? Well, things like, is it really a good idea to build a hydrogen bombs? [4]

Is Your Speech True?

What does "true" mean? The answer to that would be twofold. What are you trying to do with your speech? There are two things you can do with it. One is you can manipulate reality so that it does what you want it to do. That's the sort of speech people use when they are trying to get what they want. The problem with that is that they can't actually know what they want. They just hypothesize what it is that they want based on some theory and then they try to manipulate the world so that they get that. But it's an unsatisfying venture, and often when they do get it, it's not good anyways, and it involves a kind of falsity of speech. The other way is to try to say what you mean, and think and perceive as clearly as you possibly can, always, and see what happens. The story that underlies Christianity and it is not only Christianity, it's Christianity that I am most familiar with, is that. The rule is: Live in accordance with the truth and see what happens. [5]

Different Forms of Truth

We didn’t understand that truth comes in different forms depending on its application. It’s a tricky thing, there’s the truths that apply when you’re attempting to describe the transformations of the material world, and there’s the truths that apply when you’re trying to determine how it is you should act while you’re alive, and those obviously, those have to come into alignment but they’re not in alignment right now.[6]

Importance of Spoken Truth

The Truth buttresses you most thoroughly against the vicissitudes of being. That's your salvation. The Truth - The Spoken Truth.[7]

“The truth that you already hold is not enough. You need to know more than you know.”[8]

"That’s another hallmark of truth, is that it snaps things together. People write to me all the time and say it’s as if things were coming together in my mind. It’s like the Platonic idea that all learning was remembering. You have a nature, and when you feel that nature articulated, it’s like the act of snapping the puzzle pIeces together". Interpretations

The truth, your truth, is the antidote to suffering.

Lying is like a hydra. There are extra outcomes you don't anticipate, and creates more complexities, which means you have to lie again.

The exchange of truth is curative. The Western world is predicated on that idea.

Truth is psycho-physiological hygiene.

When you tell the truth, the outcome will be the best possible. Ally yourself with the truth.

Not saying what you think, is not being.

You are not speaking the truth unless you are prepared to stand up for it. These online anonymous forums are just a place for people to allow the fetid side of their nature to have free rein.

The fundamental definition of faith in the nature of being is when you decide that speaking the truth leads to the best possible outcome.

You can’t speak the truth, perhaps, nobody can, but you can decide not to tell lies and you can learn to do that very quickly. When you lie, you are failing to bear the burden of your existence, and you feel that in your body. And then watch what happens. You have to sacrifice your life to the logos in order to prove its existence.

There isn’t anything more interesting that you can do (than tell the truth). It removes the stultifying boredom of life.

You never know what will happen if you say something that is true. It’s a miracle. Miracles happen.
